Most people don't think about this until something goes wrong. When you buy or rent a new place in Charlotte, you have no idea how many copies of that key are floating around โ previous owners, their family members, old contractors, neighbors, whoever the landlord gave a spare to at some point.
I've been a locksmith in this area for years, and I've seen what happens when people skip this step. It's never dramatic โ until it is.
Rekeying vs. Replacing โ What's the Difference?
A lot of people think "changing your locks" means buying new hardware. It doesn't have to. Rekeying means we change the internal pins inside your existing lock cylinder so that your old keys stop working and new keys are cut. Same lock, different key. It's faster and usually costs significantly less than a full replacement.
If your locks are older, damaged, or low-quality, replacement makes more sense. But for most standard deadbolts and knob locks in good shape, rekeying does exactly what you need.
In Charlotte, rekeying a standard door lock typically costs less than $30โ$50 per lock. Replacing the same lock with comparable hardware runs $80โ$150+. For a house with 3 exterior doors, that difference adds up fast.
Who Has a Key to Your New Place?
Think about it from the previous occupant's perspective. Over the years they lived there, they probably gave keys to:
- A dog walker or house sitter
- A cleaning service
- A family member or friend
- A contractor who never returned it
- A neighbor "just in case"
Even if everyone was completely honest, those keys still exist. And when a house sells or a tenant moves out, those keys don't magically stop working.
What About Rental Properties?
If you're renting, North Carolina law doesn't automatically require landlords to rekey between tenants โ though many responsible ones do. It's worth asking. If they say it was rekeyed, ask when. If there's any uncertainty, just get it done yourself. The peace of mind is worth more than what it costs.
When Should You Rekey?
Same day you move in, ideally. Or at least within the first week. Before you're storing valuables, before you've established a routine, before anyone knows you're there.
